Alt Updater is a free WordPress plugin designed to automate the creation of image metadata in the Media Library. It generates alt text, captions, and descriptions using AI while taking into account the context in which an image is used. The goal is to improve accessibility and SEO without requiring site owners to manually write metadata for every image.
The plugin is built with reliability and control in mind. All AI-generated content can be reviewed before being saved, and a multi-level fallback system ensures metadata generation continues even when individual AI models are unavailable.
What Problem Alt Updater Solves
Managing image metadata at scale is time-consuming, especially for content-heavy websites. Many images are uploaded with non-descriptive filenames and no alt text, which negatively impacts accessibility and search engine visibility.
Alt Updater addresses this by:
- Automatically generating relevant metadata
- Using post content to avoid generic descriptions
- Providing bulk tools for large media libraries
- Preventing accidental overwrites through manual confirmation
Core Functionality
AI-Based Metadata Generation
Alt Updater uses AI models to generate three types of metadata for each image:
- Alt Text for accessibility and SEO
- Captions for front-end display
- Descriptions for media library organization
Generation is based on available context, including the post title and post content where the image appears. If an image is not attached to any post, the plugin falls back to analyzing the filename and existing media data.
Context Awareness
Rather than producing generic descriptions, Alt Updater evaluates how an image is used within a page. This context-aware approach helps ensure that the generated metadata reflects the surrounding content, improving relevance for both users and search engines.
For example, the same image used in different posts can result in different metadata suggestions depending on context.
Filename Analysis
Many images are uploaded with camera-generated or random filenames such as IMG_2039.jpg. Alt Updater detects these patterns and treats them as a signal that additional inference is required.
While the plugin does not automatically rename files, it uses contextual clues to generate meaningful metadata that compensates for poor filenames.
Installation
Alt Updater follows standard WordPress installation procedures.
- Upload the
alt-updaterfolder to/wp-content/plugins/ - Activate the plugin from the Plugins menu
- Navigate to the settings page to complete configuration
No database changes are made until the plugin is activated.
Configuration
API Key Setup
Alt Updater connects to OpenRouter to access AI models.
To configure:
- Create an API key at https://openrouter.ai/keys
- Paste the key into the plugin settings
- Save changes
The plugin will not function without a valid API key.
Model Selection and Fallback System
Alt Updater allows the selection of multiple AI models to improve reliability.
- A Primary Model is used for normal requests
- A Secondary Model is used if the primary model fails
- A Free Backup Model is used as a last resort
If a model fails due to rate limits, quota issues, or network errors, the plugin automatically retries using the next model in the sequence. This process is transparent to the user.
Character Limits
Character limits can be set independently for alt text, captions, and descriptions. These limits help ensure compliance with accessibility recommendations and prevent overly verbose outputs.
Generated content that exceeds a limit is safely trimmed rather than discarded.
Using Alt Updater
Single Image Workflow
For individual images, Alt Updater provides a per-image generation option. After triggering AI generation, all suggested metadata is displayed but not saved automatically. This allows users to review and edit the content before applying it.
Bulk Generation Workflow
For larger libraries, Alt Updater supports bulk processing. Multiple images can be selected and processed in parallel. Generated metadata is marked as pending until the user confirms and saves the changes.
This design prevents accidental mass updates and gives users full control.
Error Handling and Reliability
Alt Updater is designed to fail gracefully.
If generation fails:
- The plugin automatically retries with fallback models
- Clear error messages are shown if all attempts fail
- No existing metadata is overwritten
Common causes of failure include exhausted API credits or invalid model configuration.
Data Usage and Privacy
Alt Updater only sends text-based information to AI models. Image files are never uploaded or transmitted.
All generated metadata is stored locally in the WordPress database, and no external data storage is used.
Recommended Usage Guidelines
To get the best results:
- Review all AI-generated text before saving
- Keep alt text concise and descriptive
- Use bulk generation for older media libraries
- Configure a free model as a fallback to avoid interruptions
